During my undergraduate degree at The University of Alaska Anchorage, I was the assistant features editor for the campus newspaper, The Northern Light. I also became a multimedia editor towards the end of my undergraduate for The Northern Light.
Mountain View is the most diverse neighborhood in the U.S., according to the 2014 diversity census created by UAA’s sociology professor, Chad Farrell. Anchorage welcomes refugees with the help from Catholic Social Services and Anchorage Community Land Trust. They are given opportunities to be integrated into the community by programs like Fresh International Gardens.
As a former photojournalist and UAA journalism professor, Carolyn Hall had multiple experiences carrying 60 pounds of camera equipment. The public asked her where the cameraman was. She always had to point out that she was the cameraman. During these encounters and many others behind the scenes, Hall realized that women experienced more issues with sexism than men.
Animals are known to create companionships with their human counterparts and form a significant impact on each others’ lives. Ashley Perry created the “Shelter Animals Reading Program” for children who want to practice reading in front of a sheltered animal at Anchorage Animal Care and Control.
Within the Underground Dance Company studio, strobes of blue and purple hues of light illuminate the dance floor. Booming music fills the room while young dancers prepare for their dance battles. Jermine Bulaong and Ives Viray have been hosting Room 100 dance events for several years now, but this time they’ve included dance battles for children.
As the Alaska population fluctuates, the population of older citizens will be increasing. UAA has provided another year of the geriatric interdisciplinary leadership development program this upcoming academic year.
The training program is geared towards professionals and students who want to provide care to Alaskans, Alaska Native elders and their families in rural and frontier communities.
The AK GILD program was funded by the federal government in 2015 under the Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program. The AK GILD program partnered with Southcentral Foundation and established itself at UAA.
A normal day for Deven Jackson consists of attending West High School, playing on the basketball team and managing his clothing brand, Rage City Company. At first, he wanted to sell T-shirts to pay for his lunch, but his brand started circulating around Anchorage and thoughts of expanding came to mind.
Located on the first floor of the Anchorage School District Education Center is the Transitions Coffee Shop which helps students in the Adult Community Transition program learn workplace skills and how to make a warm cup of coffee.
Lucia Wooley, teacher aid in the ACT program, is working with several students with disabilities to hone their skills through this new opportunity.
